The word butterfly comes from the old English word buterfleogo meaning butter and flying creature.
Butterflies live almost every where in the world, in Tropical rain forests, woodlands, Cold Mountain tops and deserts.
Many butterflies travel great distance to spend the winter in a warm climate.
There are about 15,000 to 20,000 kinds of butterflies. The largest butterfly, Queen Alexandra's bird wing and it has a wing spread of about28 centimeters and the smallest butterflies are the western pygmy blue of North America. It has a wing spread of a bout 1 centimeter.
